Don't get me wrong, I think fans of other sports get treated just as
poorly but since boxing is my true love, I can speak on it more
passionately. My biggest problem is with the ringside announcers we are
forced to settle for who give us the color and blow by blow description
of the fights we watch. Either the powers that be think we are idiots
or there must be a hell of a lot of nepotism.
Now, I don't know if Larry Merchant and his ilk are stupid or ignorant
in the area of boxing. What I do know is that they are unable to give
us anything meaningful during the fight. If they know their stuff, they
certainly are not able to express their knowledge. These guys are an
insult to the boxing fan, and I mean all boxing fans. No matter what
our level of expertise we are entitled to the best.
Please don't misunderstand, there are some great ones out there, I just
want to get rid of the slop. I love Al Bernstein, Alex Wallau, Sean
O'Grady and a lot more. We know who the good ones are and so must the
Network higher ups. They're not idiots. I just don't know if the fan
in boxing has any say so, and if we do how do we make our wishes known?
Just think, Alex Wallau is listening to the crisp announcing of Al
Bernstein, thinks a bit and gives us some great insight on what we are
watching, a lot like John Madden on football. Just think, a whole fight
of announcing like that, instead of the slurred speech of a horrid
announcer who tells us how this fight relates to The Roman era of
Gladiators.
